I would advise any animal lover to be very careful. There is ALOT of politics in the world of Animal Sheltering...almost as much as there is in Washington D.C.
Example #1 The HSUS, is not as "humane" as they want you to believe. While publicly making it look like their mission is to save animals at all costs, the HSUS advocates FOR THE DEATHS OF CATS AND DOGS in many cases.
While saying one thing, the HSUS has went and done the exact opposite, and cats and dogs have died because of it.
Feral cats and pit bulls are especially targeted for death by the so called "humane" society. The HSUS has consistently OPPOSED TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return) Programs, which would save millions of cats' lives every year.
When the Michael Vick dogs were taken into custody of officials, the HSUS said "Kill them". Some of those dogs are now friendly pets in homes with children. The rest have made great imporvement and are almost ready to be adopted.
When feral cat caretakers have asked the HSUS to help them fight City Hall, who wanted to murder the cats, the HSUS took the side of CITY HALL and said "Kill the Cats".
The HSUS is on record numerous times as saying that "humane euthanasia" (murder) is a must.
So much for "humane" treatment. I wouldnt want to be treated with such "humane" treat
ment, would you?
I didnt think so.
Example #2 The ASPCA are mass murderers of cats and dogs. They recently fought a Bill called "Oreo's Law" which would have allowed rescue groups to save New York City's cats and dogs before they were murdered by 'shelters'. So, the ASPCA would rather that CATS AND DOGS IN NYC BE MURDERED, RATHER THAN RESCUED. Insanity.
And since these wolves in sheep's clothing, these cat and dog murderers, in the HSUS, and ASPCA are often the very ones who write shelter laws, we can blame the killing of 4 millions cats and dogs in 'shelters' every year directly on those who make and support such mass murder possible...the HSUS, and ASPCA.
The bottom line is this: Any 'shelter' or 'shelter manual' that condones murdering healthy cats and dogs, is not a 'shelter' or 'shelter manual', but instead are concentration camps/concentration camp propaganda pamphlets.
I know...it's hard to believe. I myself thought that these groups really cared about one thing and one thing only: Saving lives.
The truth is that they only care about two things:
1. Donations from good-hearted animal lovers who dont know the truth about these fraudulent murderers.
2. Expediency (Instead of working hard to save lives of precious living souls, equally as precious as themselves, they take the nazi route: "Kill 'em and add 'em to the pile...then throw 'em away like garbage". Many 'shelters' still use the gas chamber.)
But murder is murder, whether by knife, gun or needle.
For proof of this, please do a search for "Nathan Winograd official website" or "The No Kill Advocacy Center".
He has documented proof of everything that I said in this post.
P.S. For you PETA supporters out there, I'm sorry, but it's time for a wake up call: Since the year 2000, PETA has murdered 20,000 cats and dogs with their own deadly hands. So much for 'ethics'.
PETA, in recent years has had a kill rate of 97%.
PETA head, Ingrid Newkirk is on record as having said "We dont believe in right to life for animals". Of course she also went to work early just to murder cats and dogs when she worked at a kill 'shelter'.
Until EVERY ONE OF US peacefully overthrow kill shelter and animal control operators in our community, and replace them with No Kill operators/directors, and the PETA members, HSUS members and ASPCA members overthrow current murderers who 'lead' the so called "animal welfare" groups, precious souls will continue to be murdered.
So much for 'shelter'.
Shelter: A safe haven. A place of protection.
Yeah....if only.
Excellent resource and very informative.

Great for non-profits looking to help increase their volunteer initiatives. Well written with lot's of resouces to call upon in addition to the information written.
Incredibly helpful!

As someone who is looking to get into a career in animal welfare, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. The HSUS obviously is a very well-known and well-respected institution, so I know that I can trust their advice and information about volunteer management, among other topics. It's one thing to read a book by an expert, but quite another when an organization is willing to stamp its name and reputation on the book, as the HSUS has done for this book. Not only was the book full of step by step and detailed information, but it was also a great read! I expected to be bored by it, but I actually found it to be well-written and even interesting! I would receommend this book to anyone involved with the animal welfare field, whether they are staff, board members, or volunteers. Other types of volunteer-focuses organizations may also get something out of this book as well.
